The science of cryobiology.

چکیده
The demand for effective bio-preservation methods in the medical community continues to increase with advances in transplantation and transfusion medicine [1]. In reproductive medicine, pre-implantation embryo cryopreservation has become an integral component of overall patient care, increasing the success rate per oocyte retrieval cycle [2,3]. Oocyte cryopreservation is becoming increasingly important due to legal restrictions on the creation and transplantation of supernumerary preimplantation embryos as well as ethical considerations surrounding the cryopreservation of pre-implantation embryos [4,5]. Early investigations into the effects of sub-physiologic temperatures on living cells have been reviewed in great detail [6]. The current chapter will attempt to provide a broad overview of cryobiology, and refer to the reproductive biology literature when appropriate. Readers interested in learning more details are directed at several excellent texts and reviews on the various subjects [7–20].

Exact solutions of a two parameter flux model and cryobiological applications.
Solute-solvent transmembrane flux models are used throughout biological sciences with applications in plant biology, cryobiology (transplantation and transfusion medicine), as well as circulatory and kidney physiology. Using a standard two parameter differential equation model of solute and solvent transmembrane flux described by Jacobs [The simultaneous measurement of cell permeability to wate...
متن کاملKey issues in bioheat transfer simulations for the application of cryosurgery planning.
The bioheat transfer simulation is undoubtedly the foundation for developing computerized tools for cryosurgery planning and analysis. While a large variety of techniques for bioheat transfer simulations are available in the literature of the past several decades, it is only their integration with clinical criteria and constraints which can make computerized planning a practical reality. This b...
متن کاملSemen Banking and Cryobiology
Cryo banking of spermatozoa is an essential aspect of fertility preservation. With the advancements in cryobiology and better understanding of cryoprotectants and assisted reproduction, indications for semen banking are expanding. The exponential developments that have occurred over the years in the field of cryopreservation have proved that frozen sperm is as good as fresh sperm in fertilizing...
متن کاملElectric and magnetic fields in cryopreservation.
Electromagnetic warming has a long history in cryobiology as a preferred method for recovering large tissue masses from cryopreservation, especially from cryopreservation by vitrification. It is less well-known that electromagnetic fields may be able to influence ice formation during cryopreservation by non-thermal mechanisms. Both theory and published data suggest that static and oscillating e...
